Heritage student killed in crash

CONYERS - Three students at Heritage High School were involved in a one-vehicle crash Saturday that resulted in the death of a 17-year-old girl.

Sgt. Jodi Shupe with the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office said the male driver, also 17, was driving a 2005 Nissan Altima that was traveling southbound along Ebenezer Road around 3:45 p.m. when he lost control of the car as he was negotiating a curve at Potts Road.

"The vehicle began to roll over, rolling across the intersection of Potts Road striking a tree at the intersection of Potts Road and Ebenezer Road," Shupe said.

The driver and female passenger, who were both wearing seat belts, were trapped due to the impact with the tree and were extricated by Rockdale County Fire Department personnel. The driver was transported by air ambulance to Atlanta Medical Center. The girl, who was a senior at Heritage, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Sheriff's Office did not release the identity of the victim as of press time Saturday.

The rear passenger, a 16-year-old male, was unrestrained and was able to climb from the vehicle through the back window. He was transported by ambulance to Rockdale Medical Center, Shupe said.

An 11-year-old boy who lived near the scene witnessed the accident. His dad, a coach at Heritage High School, reported the wreck to the Sheriff's Office, Shupe said.

Shupe said no contributing factors were the cause for the wreck and the Sheriff's Office does not anticipate any charges will be filed.
