Board of Commissioners District 5: The Job

Editor's Note: The following is the sixth in a series of packages that will look at the local positions that are up for election in November and the candidates who are asking for Newton residents' votes.

COVINGTON - County commissioners are elected to four-year terms and must reside in the district they represent. Commissioners set policies and approve an annual budget and millage rate, which determines property tax assessed in the county.

They vote on various issues affecting the county, including rezonings, and approve beer and wine licenses and land acquisition.

Commissioners also appoint members of various boards and committees, including the Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, Newton County Recreation Commission and the Newton County Library Board.

The job carries a starting salary of $18,980 per year with annual adjustments for cost of living, years served and other considerations.
