COVINGTON - The Newton County Sheriff's Office is investigating a home invasion that occurred on Sept. 30, during which residents at the home were robbed at gunpoint and multiple firearms were discharged during the incident.
NCSO Investigator Mark Hegwood said four men entered the residence at 239 Almon Road by kicking in the back door. They were each said to be armed - according to the victims, three of the men had "long guns," i.e. rifles or shotguns, and the fourth man had a handgun.
He said a man, two women, two toddler-age children and a 3-week-old infant were home at the time of the incident. The man and one woman were tied up while the four men rifled through the house and taking cash they found. The second woman, the mother of the infant, was not tied up, Hegwood said.
During the robbery, two friends arrived at the front door of the residence and when they knocked at the door, they were answered by a hail of gunfire from within.
"Witnesses said there was a lot of gunfire," Hegwood said. "A shotgun had been fired into one of the walls."
After firing the weapons at the couple who had arrived at the scene, the four men left on foot out the back door of the residence.
No one was hurt in the incident, Hegwood said.
They are described as black men wearing black ski masks and black bandannas.
When investigators arrived at the scene, they found crack cocaine and a small amount of marijuana at the home. The Department of Family and Children's Services was notified and the young children were turned over to a relative.
The three residents - April Wine Yarbrough, 20, and Breanna Marie Roberts, 20, both of 239 Almon Road and Ricky Cornelius Barr Jr., 18, of 10219 S. Dinah Circle - were all charged with possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, less than 1 ounce, and cruelty to children.
