Southern Heartland Art Guild to hold its first art show

COVINGTON - Southern Heartland Art Guild has promoted the arts and provided opportunities for Newton and Rockdale artists to showcase their work for the past 20 years. Now, for the first time, the guild will hold its own juried art show.

In conjunction with United Bank, Southern Heartland is hosting the First Annual Artful Harvest Juried Art Show from Oct. 7-30 at Newton County Library, located at 7116 Floyd St. in Covington.

The show will feature up to 100 pieces by area artists and is open to the public at no cost.

Artists from all over Georgia have been invited to enter, said guild member Jan Jentzen.

"We're just so excited and we hope to draw a lot of people from surrounding areas," she said.

The guild is accepting art in a variety of categories, including paintings, drawings, three-dimensional art, sculptures, photography and mosaics.

"We've been trying for so many years to bring visual arts to the public. We think there's a real need for more cultural-type things in the area. There's not that much going on," Jentzen said.

Artwork will be accepted at the library from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday. Submissions will be judged, with an awards ceremony and reception to take place from

5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 17. The public is invited to attend.

The Best of Show prize is $750, with the first place winner receiving $500, the second place winner receiving $300 and the third place winner $200. Eight honorable mentions will receive $25 each.

The Southern Heartland Art Guild got its beginnings in 1985 when The Covington-Oxford Arts Guild and the Rockdale Arts Alliance were formed. Both groups had similar goals and community outreach programs.

In 1987, the annual "Off the Square Art Show" was held offering a fall venue for artists to showcase, demonstrate and sell their work. As the show gained popularity, it was relocated to Salem Campground and renamed The Southern Heartland Arts Festival.

In 1988, The Covington-Oxford Arts Guild received nonprofit status and five years later joined the Rockdale Arts Alliance to become Art Guild East Inc. With the art festival demanding more attention from board members, it was decided to change the corporate name to Southern Heartland Arts Inc.

The Southern Heartland Art Gallery opened four years ago on the Square in downtown Covington.
