COVINGTON - Firefighters answered an early morning call on U.S. Highway 278 on Thursday when a passerby noticed flames shooting from the roof of Double Gs Sports Bar and Grill.
"It was a rapid response and a rapid extinguish," said Capt. Rob Christopher of the Covington Fire Department Thursday afternoon. "It's still under investigation. We're looking at 60 to 70 percent loss to the building."
Christopher said an investigator with the State Fire Marshal's Office is assisting CFD investigators, Deputy Chief and Fire Marshal David Carter and Capt. and Assistant Fire Marshal Tony Smith.
They believe the fire started somewhere in the kitchen attic area, but no cause has been established.
Christopher said the call came in about 6:20 a.m., and when firefighters arrived flames were visible.
"We set up both ladder trucks and utilized large quantities of water to stop it quickly," he said. "They were able to pretty much stop it where they found it."
He said there was a good cooperative effort from the Covington Police Department which managed traffic, blocking several lanes on U.S. 278 during rush hour. Christopher said traffic was again flowing smoothly by 7:30 a.m.
The building was originally home to Pizza Hut and has recently housed other restaurants.
