COVINGTON - Temperatures are getting cooler and football season is under way. That means one thing for many students in the Newton County School System - it's almost time for fall break.
This year, the students will get an unusually long break since they have a shortened school week this week, followed by the weeklong fall break. On Friday, students will not report to their schools because it is a teacher workday. The following week, students, educators and administrators get a fall break, starting Monday and continuing until Friday, Oct. 10. The NCSS central office will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday during the break week and will close at 4:30 p.m. on Friday's teacher workday, according to Sherri Viniard, director of public relations for NCSS. Students and staff will report back to their schools and offices on Oct. 13, to begin the second nine weeks. Schools will issue student report cards for the first nine weeks on Oct. 23. The next holiday for the Newton County School System is scheduled for Nov. 11 for the observance of Veteran's Day, while the next extended break is for Thanksgiving from Nov. 24-28.
