At a Newton County School Board meeting during School Bus Safety Week, officials from the Newton County School System and the school board honored lead school bus drivers with certificates and thanks all of the system's 235 drivers. COVINGTON - The city of Covington is set to host its second town hall meeting of the year at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Turner Lake Complex located at 6185 Turner Lake Road.
Piedmont Halloween bash
The middle school students at Piedmont Academy sponsored a Halloween Monster Bash Saturday, when the students raised $300 to purchase class book sets for the language arts department. Students Lacy Adamson, Ashley Young and Julia Maloney worked with middle school sponsors, Jana Arp and Elizabeth Davis, to plan and organize the dance. The students attended the bash in their Halloween costumes and had a great time.

Fairview holds Cancer Survivors Day
As a way to bring attention to the need for early screening and detection of all types of cancer, Fairview Elementary School held a special event, Fairview Cancer Survivors Day, on Thursday to honor six staff members who have battled with cancer. All faculty and staff members and students wore pink Thursday to show support for the "Pink Ladies," as they call themselves. They also purchased pink ribbons with all proceeds going to the school's Relay for Life Team. In addition to the recognition, the school held a special luncheon for the women. Students and staff at Mansfield Elementary School participated in Wear Red Day during Red Ribbon Week, a national drug prevention campaign, last week. Other Newton County public schools also participated in pledge signings, dress-up days, special programs, door decorations and contests.
NCSS open enrollment ends Monday
Open Enrollment for state health insurance for Newton County School System employees will end Nov. 10. Each employee has received a State Health Decision Plan Guide 2009 detailing any changes and instructions on how to enroll online. The only employee who does not need to go online in the employee who does not have State Health Insurance and does not want State Health Insurance.
