Heritage earns four first-team selections

CONYERS - The Heritage softball team put together an outstanding season this fall, finishing second in Region 8-AAAA and earning a trip to the Class AAAA North State Sectional.

So it should come as no surprise that the Lady Patriots are well represented on the 2008 8-AAAA All-Region Softball Team with four first-team selections - shortstop Whitney Phillips, first baseman Kat Baize, catcher Callie Alford and pitcher Jamie Melson.

Overall, nine players from three Rockdale County schools were named to either the first or second teams, which are selected by the Region 8-AAAA softball coaches.

Phillips, a senior, hit .333 for the Lady Patriots with 36 hits and stole a team-high 27 bases.

Baize, also a senior, compiled a .280 batting average with 18 RBIs. The first baseman also had a fielding percentage of .981.

Alford, a sophomore, had a sensational season, batting a team-high .455 with 45 hits and 22 runs.

Melson, a senior left-handed pitcher, compiled a record of 17-7-1 with a 0.75 ERA. She struck out 119 and walked only 12 in 160 innings of work.

Rockdale senior first baseman Kaitlin Overstreet was the only other local player selected to the first team. Overstreet hit a team-high .424 for the Lady Bulldogs with 17 RBIs.

The trio of Jessica Vason, Tori Beauchamp and Megan Campbell were named to the second team along with Rockdale's Stephanie Scaffe.

Vason, a sophomore third baseman, hit a team-high .451 for the Lady Seminoles and had an on-base percentage of .462.

Beauchamp, a junior shortstop, compiled a .315 batting average and scored 16 runs for Salem.

Campbell, a senior center fielder, chalked up a team-high 25 hits for the Lady Seminoles and finished with a batting average of .448.

Scaffe, a senior who split her time between the pitcher's circle and shortstop, hit .368 with 25 hits and 13 RBIs for the Lady Bulldogs. She also posted a 7-4 mark on the mound and collected 52 strikeouts.

Region champion Loganville swept the top honors as Jessica Womble was selected the Player of the Year and Katy Lewis was named the Pitcher of the Year.
