ATLANTA - The Alcovy boys basketball squad kicked off its season Wednesday in style by ousting North Springs 67-37 at Philips Arena.
Playing for the first time without Alcovy's all-time scoring leader Worrel Clahar (graduation), coach Eugene Brown was unsure as to who would emerge as the new offensive threat. Well, he got four, the number of Tigers who reached double figures in scoring in limited action. "That was really encouraging because we didn't just have one guy do it," Brown said. "We didn't play guys a lot in the second half because of the size of the lead, so a lot of guys got to play. We found out a lot about some of those guys we had coming off the bench. "We still have some work to do, but it was pretty encouraging." Freshman Devon Edwards led the Tigers (1-0) in scoring with 14 points. Brad Williams added 13. Alcovy's Jordan Butts and Kevin Boyle (six rebounds) each had 10 points apiece. Darrius Miller had a team-high nine boards. Overall, the Tigers had just 12 turnovers and went 23-of-29 from the free-throw line. "We had been practicing for a while and getting kind of anxious to get out on the court and to actually get in some real game situations," Brown said. "They were a little nervous (and) excited to start, but once they settled down they really played well." Alcovy hosts North Clayton at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday during its first home game of the season.
