COVINGTON - A 77-year-old man died Friday following a one-vehicle crash on Dixie Road in east Newton County, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
Robert Burgess of Mineral Bluff, formerly of Covington, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Trooper First Class Bryan Cuendet. Newton County 911 received a call about 5:49 p.m. reporting the crash. Cuendet said when he arrived, he found the victim's 1998 BMW M3 sedan on its roof. The vehicle apparently overturned after it struck a power pole guide wire, he said. Cuendet said it appeared the cause of the accident was a medical condition. An autopsy was performed and showed that Burgess suffered a heart attack, he said. Burgess was traveling alone and headed south on Dixie Road near the intersection of Ga. Highway 142 when the accident occurred. Burgess is the 10th Newton County traffic fatality victim in 2008. Rockdale Citizen staff reporter Jay Jones contributed to this story.
