CONYERS - Are you ready for some Xtreme football?
Today, the No. 1-seeded New Rock Redskins (10 and under) will compete for a title during the Georgia Xtreme Youth Football League Championship against the New Birth Eagles at Morris Brown College's Herdon Stadium in Atlanta. This is the third consecutive year the Redskins - who went undefeated in the regular season at 10-0 - have reached the championship game. "This team is one of the most talented that I've ever coached, but also they really, really are a team," 10U Redskins coach Chris Sizemore said. "There is no one individual star; this is a complete team. All they do is congratulate each other. It's just a total team effort, and I've got some of the best coaches I've ever had as well." New Birth, based out of Lithonia, only had one loss this season. It came at home against New Rock, who won in convincing fashion 33-0. "You never know when you play somebody a second time what they've got in store for you," Sizemore said, who is in his fourth year as head coach. "So, we'll have to wait and see how things go." The 10U Redskins include Tay Tay Gowan, Ronald Huff Jr., JeJuan McCalston, Deandre Huff Jr., Romario Johnson Jr., Robert Faust, Stephen Montac, Tra McCullum, Montae Bailey, Schliake Merchant, Tyler Norman, Nick Johnson, Joseph Loreto, Breone Adkins, Case Segrest, Kalil Bradley, Blake Hall, Siyani Boyd, Curtis Stone Jr. and Marcus Robertson. "I just coach because I love to coach," Sizemore said. "It's just a joy to watch them develop and grow, and the friendships they build with each other. It's nice to see some of the life lessons they learn in football. These are the kinds of things we enjoy with teaching football." The 6-and-under Redskins are also competing for a title today in their division at noon. Jason Murdock can be reached at jason.murdock@rockdalecitizen.com.
