COVINGTON - At least six shots were fired into a home at 128 Gum Tree Trail about 1:30 a.m. Nov. 13, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office.
Lt. Mark Mitchell said the resident at the location told them he and his wife were asleep when they were awakened by the sound of several gunshots. The man said his 15-year-old stepson came into their room, saying he had heard the same thing.
Mitchell said neighbors also heard the ruckus and one witness said he had observed a small black car with no lights on parked in front of the residence about that time.
"Deputies did find several rounds from a weapon that had penetrated the residence," Mitchell said. "Right now, it's been turned over to investigations. They don't have any leads or suspects and we're asking anyone who has any information about this incident to let us hear from them."
In other news, the guardian of a 13-year-old girl notified the NCSO that the juvenile had been sexually assaulted.
Mitchell said the young teen said the assault was committed by an acquaintance.
"Investigators are looking at all the facts to see exactly what happened," Mitchell said. "They are looking for any leads or anything they can follow up on."
Also, a woman reported she was robbed at gunpoint while in her driveway on Highgate Trail about 6 p.m. Wednesday night.
The woman told authorities she had pulled into her driveway when she was approached by a black man with a weapon who demanded her purse. She said another black man was with him.
He grabbed her purse containing $5 and fled the scene. She told authorities the purse was an "imitation Coach" valued at $20.
NCSO investigators are hopeful someone who may have further information on these incidents and will contact them.
