CONYERS - DeKalb Technical College is planning to expand its partnership with the Rockdale Career Academy.
Starting in January, DeKalb Tech will offer several courses through an evening academy at the school for adults seeking a technical education.
For its winter quarter, students can begin earning certificates of credit in order to become an air conditioning technician's assistant, brake technician, welding and joining technology oxyacetylene technician, drafting assistant and certified nursing assistant. Students can also study management and supervisory development.
These courses will provide basic skills and applications in high-demand fields. Students can earn certificates over several quarters and could eventually earn an associate degree or diploma after taking other courses.
"They can continue at our Newton campus or at our main campus in Clarkston," said Mark Hicks, dean of DeKalb Tech's Covington campus. "There's also a possibility of taking courses online, depending on the subject area."
Other courses planned for the evening academy include introduction to computers, English and math. In the future, more courses and program may be available.
Hicks said the certificate program could serve more than 150 students this winter quarter.
He said some students will only have to pay for about 90 percent of their educational program if they use the HOPE Grant, which pays tuition for Georgia residents enrolled in a technical certificate program or diploma program.
"They might have to pay for some fees ... and books ... but it's a great deal," he said.
Hicks said he hopes this is just the beginning of the partnership between DeKalb Tech and RCA. The college already provides classes to high school students at RCA. The two schools have teamed up before to offer evening classes. With campuses in Newton and DeKalb counties, he said he'd like to expand into Rockdale, as well.
"We are trying to get our feet in the door here," Hicks said. "If we get a good response, hopefully we can be a true satellite campus (in Rockdale)."
DeKalb Tech officials are holding an information session about the RCA Evening Academy at 7 p.m. Thursday in the commons area at RCA, which is located at 1064 Culpepper Drive in Conyers.
