NCPS report high conference attendance

COVINGTON - Schools in Newton County saw an overall increase in scheduled and held conferences during its fall conference period, the Newton County School System reported during its October work session.

According to reports, schools scheduled 10,947 conferences with parents or guardians during the conference period in early September; schools reported that 10,962 conferences were actually held.

On paper, this is an increase of 17 percent from last year's conference results.

Last September, schools reported about 83 percent of conferences held, or 6,857 of 8,249 scheduled conferences. However, Elementary Curriculum Director Ken Proctor said that number was likely higher because conferences might have been held over the phone or another day than what was scheduled, although none were reported.

This year, schools reported those numbers - 530 conferences were held over the phone or on another date than what was originally scheduled.

Even though schools overall are reporting an increase in parents attending their original scheduled meetings, some elementary schools still are seeing cancelled conferences in the double digits, and West Newton had 133 scheduled meetings that were not held.

School officials said the reasons some conferences aren't held are due to the students' grades or attitudes improving, while some may be no shows.

The next round of elementary and middle school parent conferences scheduled for this school year is Feb. 12 and 13. During conference days, high school students are also out of school so their teachers and administrators can participate in work days or professional learning activities.
