Lions Club seeks entries for annual Christmas parade

COVINGTON - Believe it or not, The Covington and Newton County Christmas Parade is less than five weeks away, so now's the time to start planning if you want to enter.

The Covington Lions Club and Main Street Covington are sponsoring the parade, which will take place at 11 a.m. on Dec. 6.

The theme of this year's event is "Celebrate the Season and Salute the Troops." Local schools, businesses, organizations, churches, families and other groups are invited to participate.

All float entries should be decorated with a holiday or patriotic theme, in honor of the local National Guard Unit that will be deploying to Afghanistan in 2009.

Organizers are asking that entries be limited to one float. In years past, floats have been followed by vehicles representing the same group, said Ed Minge of the Lions Club, and this year an effort is being made to cut down on additional traffic.

"Everything must be decorated, even commercial vehicles," Minge said.

Last year, nearly 3,000 people participated in the parade, and Minge said he hopes to see the same turnout this year.

Entry forms can be picked up at the Covington-Newton County Chamber of Commerce; Main Street Covington; A Touch of Country; Ludies Sporting Goods, Mayfield Ace Hardware or downloaded at www.covingtongalions.org.

There is no entry fee. The deadline to enter is Dec. 1.
