ATHENS - Georgia Tech is headed to Athens to join Georgia in its NCAA regional - just as coach Danny Hall expected.
Georgia Tech learned Monday it will play Big East champion Louisville in a first-round game at Georgia's Foley Field on Friday at 7 p.m. Georgia will open against Lipscomb Friday at 3 p.m. Lipscomb, from the Atlantic 10, will make its first NCAA baseball tournament appearance.
Hall said he expected to be placed in Georgia's regional after Georgia Tech was not included as one of the 16 regional sites announced on Sunday.
""I kind of felt like that was probably where we were going to end up, so no it was not a surprise,' Hall said. ""We had hoped we might get a regional site, but the ACC got four, and that's a lot.'
North Carolina, North Carolina State, Miami and Florida State were picked from the Atlantic Coast Conference to host regionals.
Georgia Tech won two of three regular-season games against Georgia. The Yellow Jackets won at Tech and in Athens. Georgia beat Tech 3-2 at Turner Field in Atlanta on May 13.
""We do have familiarity with Georgia and they have familiarity with us if we do end up playing each other, but there's no guarantee of that,' Hall said.
Georgia, the Southeastern Conference regular-season champion, was named the No. 8 seed in the tournament.
""We're very excited to be one of the national seeds, and I think we were rewarded for being SEC champions and playing one of the nation's toughest schedules,' said Georgia coach David Perno.
Georgia is 11-3 while winning three NCAA regionals at Foley Field - 2001, 2004 and 2006.
