CONYERS - Not even the rain, the cramped space in the gymnasium or parents full of anxiety could dampen the spirits of Heritage High School's Class of 2008 graduates who were set to embark on their long-awaited journey into adulthood.
"We are the extraordinary," said inspirational speaker Caz Brennan in his address to the 339 graduates, who have already accepted more than $402,000 in scholarships. "There may be only one valedictorian, one prom queen or one captain of the team, but seated here is a class of ordinary people with extraordinary potential. So, let's go out of here today and accomplish the extraordinary." Students listened to speeches given by Salutatorian Victoria Conner and John Hiner, who stepped in for Valedictorian Amy Kovac when she left graduation practice on Thursday and decided not to walk or speak at the ceremony. Graduates then walked across the stage to accept their diplomas, which represented, as Conner put it, "four years of classes, homework, friends, fun weekends, spring break, dances and hard work." Senior Michael Knowlton said the world may not be ready for the graduates, but the graduates are ready for the world. "I believe we will leave as one of the most spirited classes, not just for our perseverance through adversity, but for our tenacity to prevail and to always show what Patriot Pride truly is," HHS graduate Lauren Cummings said. - Heritage High School student Rebecca Bradley contributed to this article.
