5-24-2008 Citizen Poll

This week's Citizen Poll is an open line ...

"The students lost in the traffic accident was very sad and as a parent I feel for the families. I must ask, there was a 20-year-old man attending Salem High School?"

--

"Grown men are Tasering children in the high school cafeteria. Do we have any rights left?"

--

"How ironic that after living in Conyers for 15 years I encounter the rudest behaving adult at the honors award ceremony at Heritage High. I asked a woman who was with her son, who is in the band, if some seats were available. There were two on one side of her and three on the other. She told me she was saving one. I needed 4 seats together and asked her if she could move one way or another so that the four of us could sit together. Her refusal to move - she told me flat out, no - left me nearly speechless. What I should have told her, after thanking her sarcastically, was that her selfish, rude behavior left my ex-husband, a disabled veteran, having to stand with our daughter until the senior awards were given. I just hope her son can raise above her example, and learn what true honor means. What a pitiful way to represent Heritage High/Band Parents."

"To the person who wanted charges filed in the ATV accident, clearly, it was an accident, because it's not like she did it on purpose. A heartless person like you would not know that it is punishment enough having to go through the loss of a child. Thank God Mr. Wigington isn't as ignorant as you are."

--

"To the person who said it was nonsense about the superintendent and the Tahoe. The issue is NOT that he was given a car, it was the fact he was given a car when the one he had was perfectly fine and furthermore, you must be one of those who just moved here because as true citizens of Rockdale know, $27,000 can be spent in much better ways on our schools: 871 boxes of paper for our schools, 9,000 student lunches, 7,714 gallons of gas for the school buses, provided 30 teachers with a 3 percent raise, hire a teacher's aid, hire new crossing guards, bought 1,830 footballs."

--

"In response to the comment about the 8-year-old that was killed in an ATV wreck, it was an accident. You weren't there. You don't know what happened. You don't know the family and the little girl, so keep your comments to yourself."

--

"I wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to the employees of Snapping Shoals and Pike for their hard work on Mother's Day. The storm damage and power outages were hard to wake up to on Mother's Day. Everyone needs to realize that all of these guys had to wake up early and leave their mothers and mothers of their children on their special day. Thanks for such a great job! By the end of the day, most had their power back. Thanks again!"

"To the person who said that excessive force was used at RCHS by the police officer, I say shut your mouth until you are in this school every day. Me and my friends are basically good and we are tired of all these kids moving in from other places trying to be tough and messing up our school. It's like they walk around looking for a fight. It makes it worse for us, because the principals just make the rules tighter. I say Taser a few more and these punks will chill out. They think they are tough because they are rude to a teacher. What would you want the officer to do? Tackle the girl and leave his belt for someone to grab his gun? It was real crazy in lunch that day and I hated it. But he had never seen that girl before and she wouldn't stop or tell her name. He is a great policeman and tries to protect us. You try coming here and deal with all this mouth from the students every day that not only break rules but fight for the right to break them. I see kids openly challenge teachers because the teachers ask them to be quiet. Again, it is not everyone but the few bad ones are not being dealt with because everyone is afraid of them. Punks. The bottom line is, if someone in charge asks you to do something that is right, you should do it or face the consequences. Get these kids out so we can have a good school. Someone in charge: Please come visit this school and see. Dr. King needs to jump in the Tahoe and come stand by the cafeteria during class change. If he does, he will have some decisions to make."

"My son received an invitation in the mail to participate in a cotillion program that is being started here in Rockdale County. I was so excited to learn that someone is taking the time to start a program that will give our children skills that will help them become successful adults. In today's society I am a firm believer that this is very much needed and my son will definitely register. Thanks to Mrs. Julia Chandler for starting this much-needed program."

--

"In response to the person who wrote about bringing child endangerment charges against the parents of the child that died in a four-wheeler accident, there is no law against riding four-wheelers. Have you no compassion? This family lost a beautiful little girl. It was a horrible accident. Why don't you express your condolences to this grieving family, rather than placing blame. It was an accident. May God bless this family!"

--

"Thanks Jeff Wiggington and your Rockdale County Sheriff's Office for nothing. Maybe you should spend a little less time writing tickets and more time investigating crimes. As a victim of three felony crimes in the last six months, I (took the time) to show up, make reports, then we never heard from them again. Now that's effective policing there! If you want to skate on crime, simply commit it against a local business because Jeff and his boys are only interested in traffic violations."

--

"As a parent of a rising senior in '09, I was shocked that the seniors are required to pay a graduation fee. I was under the impression the fee covered their caps and gowns, but I learned this week it is for printed programs, use of the facilities, security, etc. I think it is time to examine our expenditures. If a child completes 12 years of study, they have to pay for everything that should be an honor for them. Maybe we need to delete some of the perks that the administration receives and apply it to graduation expenses. After all, isn't the main focus the students?"

"No global warming. That is what the people know. I hope Sen. McCain gets the truth about this fake idea. Al Gore's book should be called "Baloney." Also this "Go Green" thing is good to plant new trees. This global warming and go green will cost the taxpayers lots of money and will run the cost of goods up. Sen. McCain needs to dump his thoughts on global warming 'The Kyoto Treaty.'"

"In response to Citizen Poll, May 17, 'Girl, 8, killed,' Jordyn Grey Thompson died in a tragic accident that yes, may have been prevented. Before you condemn the parents for child endangerment unless you're perfect, take a look back at the times you may have stretched the limits. Taken from the world on May 9 was a beautiful, very busy, young lady that may have held promise for tomorrow's world. Parents are obligated either by purpose or law to make safe their children, however this is not a solitary task. Casting blame will not right any wrong, will not dissolve any grief and will not in any way comfort the hundreds of lives affected by this tragedy. And you think hundreds weren't affected. I never knew this family, but reading the same article you read and so decided to self-interpret inconsiderately, I have to say Jordyn was not 'killed,' she died tragically. I found a place in my heart and I mourn for this family's loss, and moreover the loss of the community."

"Beware criticizing first-year teachers (May 19, 2008). Everyone must start a job at year one. Just pray that there will be enough teachers available in the future who want this job as a life's work. (I am a retired Rockdale teacher now living in Florida)."

"Reading the article about the officer that used the Taser on the 16-year-old at RCHS, I find it high time that parents take control of their children and teach them some respect for school teachers and law enforcement officers. From reading the article, the girl was told to stop over and over again. The officer did not know the girl was a student, and he took the action needed to bring the situation to a stop. Who was she? Was she armed? The officer did not know any of this. Of course, we blame the officer, right? And what of the girl? A victim of police excessive force, right? NO! We all have to accept responsibility for our actions, and this 16-year-old found out the hard, but the appropriate, way. I support the officer totally. Thanks for making our schools safe when it is obvious that Dr. King will not allow the school staff to control what goes on in our schools. Maybe once he gets his new SUV, he will ride around to all the schools and see just how bad things really are."

"I read in the newspaper about an art center in Old Town Conyers, and I believe it would be great. If it would be art of many kinds, not just picture art. There are many people in Rockdale County that enjoy different kinds of art. Just think what happened in Helen. Many people from everywhere go there. It made a little town into a very busy place in the summer for many years. Hope this art center comes into being."
