Burglars take beer from store

COVINGTON - The Newton County Sheriff's Office is investigating a May 14 burglary at the Maverick at the Hub convenience store on U.S. Highway 278.

Deputy Andre Lawrence said in an incident report he received an alarm call about midnight and when he arrived at the store found the front glass door broken. The deputy reported seeing several cans of Budweiser beer and cartons of cigarettes on the ground.

The store owner arrived, and when Lawrence viewed the video surveillance tape, he was able to see a black man take a yellow-handled sledgehammer and break the lower portion of the glass door and enter the store, along with a white man, the deputy reported.

Both men went inside with 55-gallon trash cans and began filling them up with beer, and next broke into a rear office and took several cartons of cigarettes and placed them into the trash cans as well.

The black man was described as wearing a white T-shirt, dark-colored jacket with a logo on the left side, dark pants and tan-colored boots. The white man was wearing a black jacket, light-colored jeans, white shoes and a dark-colored cloth covering his eyes, the report said.

The owner of the store was unable to furnish an exact listing of items taken or give an estimated cash value at the time of the incident.
