RCHS track set to get a makeover

CONYERS - Rockdale County High School track and field athletes will have a better surface to run on next school year.

The Rockdale County Board of Education unanimously approved spending more than $116,000 to resurface the track and field event areas at the school's Reid Memorial Stadium.

According to the recommendation made Thursday by Superintendent Samuel King to the Board of Education, the scope of this project involves the removal of the deteriorated existing rubberized track surfacing and the installation of 11/2 inches of asphalt overlay and a new 1/2-inch rubberized system with striping suitable for track and field meets.

"This coincides with similar work currently under contract for the Salem High School track," King said.

Board Vice Chairman Wales Barksdale said he was surprised by the extent of the work to be done and said it's far more advanced

than when he attended the school.

"We had half grass, half dirt when I was there," he said.

The board approved the superintendent's recommendation for the proposal from low bidder Sports Turf Company Inc. in the amount of $116,990.

Board Chairman Jeff Dugan said the project will be funded through sales tax dollars allocated for Reid Stadium repairs. The project was initially budgeted for $175,000, according to the proposal analysis provided by the school system.

The work is scheduled to be completed over the summer.
