Rockdale Citizen Poll 5/17/2008

"May 1, 2008, Rockdale Citizen, "Diversity training devoted to change." Flash back, 2006 and before, voices from Rockdale began to rise from informed voters with inquisitive minds. Long before the national credenza for "change", voices of Rockdale had begun to speak loud, clear, and consistent. At each turn Rockdale voters' pursuit have experienced road blocks, double talk, and misrepresentations on a consistent basis. Many of us supported a new chair of the Board of Commissioners to operate Rockdale County in a more proficient and productive manner. The informed voter has been short changed from the day of seating the current chairman who continues to abdicate his responsibility to operate all of Rockdale County in a fair and equitable manner. On parallel notes of question, does the media struggle to report the news, make the news or both; will an ethics code with voter participation ever exist, or will a county attorney be elected to protect the voters? Note that an appointed county attorney is as a corporate lawyer, paid a retainer and expense (tax dollar) with first loyalty to protect elected and other appointed officials in lieu of tax payers/voters. Rockdale residents who do all things except pay taxes in Rockdale cannot afford to over look the responsibility to vote. Your vote is the only opportunity to change Rockdale County for the better. You asked for and now have the opportunity to select a resident of Rockdale as your political rep. It is a fact that the world easily understands the concept of a Noose vs "a knotted work related rope". The attempt cover up that continues is abominable - from the unqualified individuals who were staffing the HR Dept. through the biased games of deception. The implications of a noose are universal."

"I'd like to thank the RCSO for the DUI/speeding checkpoint that was sent up at McCalla and Avalon roads last weekend. Keep up the good work. Judging by the trash in my yard, there are plenty of people drinking and driving. It isn't bad enough that no one obeys the 25 mph speed limit, but PLEASE people DO NOT THROW YOUR TRASH OUT YOUR WINDOW. Also, to the idiot that keeps throwing used baby diapers out of their car, would you like it if I came and defecated in your yard? Be responsible - don't litter and obey the speed limit."

----

"Citizens are in a uproar over sex toys shops opening in Conyers, what about the lingerie show going on at lunch in the local bar/restaurants? You think Hooters show skin - have you seen these girls? It's worse than a strip show. Flesh on flesh, touching allowed, and a raffle for the outfit being worn. Consultation prize of your choice of a hat, t-shirt, or porn DVD."

----

"I recently visited my subdivision pool for the first time with my 8-year-old daughter and her friend. I was sickened by the teenagers at our pool. The filthy language and the filthy music. I asked them to watch their mouths. They started mocking me and the way I talk. The girls were calling the boys the N-word. I am white and do not allow my child to talk that way and I do not use profanity in my home. I think it is high time the black community teach that this is disgusting behavior no matter what race you are. It does not matter who uses the word. The meaning is the same. It is very disrespectful."

----

"I trust that the voters of Newton County will let Mr. Gresham know that they don't want someone who has been convicted of a felony involving a child under the age of 14 to serve on the school board or any other public office for that matter. I would not want him to make any decisions regarding anyone's children."

----

"I read the Citizen Poll, and have read the comments about RCA's coffee shop being closed, and for the students this is just one in a long line of things being taken away from us, being able to sit outside to eat at Heritage, the ability for the ninth-graders to be in a NORMAL high school setting, I feel bad for them, and every other class that comes into Rockdale County schools because they keep taking away things from us students. Just because some are bad seeds does not call for punishment of the whole county."

----

"My family and I would like to say thank you to Sheriff Jeff Wigington, the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office, and the Rockdale Fire Department. We live on Bridgewood Drive off of Oglesby Bridge Road. Our 100-foot-plus sweet gum tree toppled over across our driveway and front lawn blocking our exit. The sheriff, fire department, and county detainees were in our neighborhood clearing trees blocking other roads in and near our neighborhood. Sheriff Wigington drove by our home and saw my husband and I trying to cut the tree ourselves and called to his work crew to help us. If anybody needs a reason to support Jeff Wigington in his bid for re-election, I've just given you an example of why you should. Our fire, EMS, and sheriff's departments deserve a big thanks from all of us in Rockdale County for pulling together to help this county's citizens once again."

----

"I would like to make a comment about the Alpha School located on West Avenue. My kid attends this school and there are many problems. The school does not have a nurse, so when your child gets sick there is no nurse and they will not let you call home. It does not have a cafeteria. It has 2 tables with chairs. The classes are horrible. Every day after school I ask her what did you do in school today she says we watched a movie. She is not learning anything in that school. There are only a few good teachers and the kids really treat them wrong. Teachers are scared of the students. Alpha needs some reinforcements. The kids never get in trouble when they should because of their actions towards the other students and the teachers. One thing that really boggles my brain is if a student comes in late they cannot order lunch because they were late. Now what kind of school cannot get lunch for your child? This school needs to be closed down!"

----

"I find it appalling that Rockdale County government is whining about not having any money for raises, capital projects and supplies in general, but yet they are ponying up the money to help the arts council open an art gallery? Tell me, who is going to come to Old Town Conyers to see art hanging in a gallery? Do they plan on having any of the masters hang there? D. Morgan, an artist known all over the world, closed the shop in Old Town because no one came to it. I believe the voice of reason at the Board of Commissioners office has been silenced. But they'll never know because they don't read the opinion poll! And why all of a sudden are they getting to know the people of Rockdale, during an election year. It seems like a waste of county resources at best."

----

"I had information on where the suspect was living/hiding out at that stole a 2002 Dodge Dakota Pickup. Because I couldn't give the lady in RCSO Communications the precise address instead of just verbal directions, she just told me when I could tell them the exact address to call back or otherwise don't waste her/their time and hung up on me."

----

"I would like to know when the shopping center where City Slickers is located will ever look nice and not the eyesore that it is now. They tore down all the buildings and then left it abandoned.

----

"I am embarrassed by the drop in GHSGT scores at RCHS! All areas dropped at least 10 percent! Mrs. Hudson wasted valuable resources getting a review program that actually dropped the students scores! She also employed first-year or ineffective teachers in the 11th grade core classes! She needs to go and a competent principal needs to be hired!"

----

"I want to thank the sheriff's department and the Rockdale County Fire Department for their quick response to the tornado that hit Meadowbrook on Sunday morning. The clean-up crew is at work today (Tuesday). Thanks again to all who have responded."

----

"Girl, 8, killed in ATV wreck. your new item on May 13, 2008. Who presses charges of child endangerment against the parents? This was preventable, your article called it an accident ... this was not an accident, it was preventable!"

----

"To the dude that still wants his sign, go to Wal-Mart, they have crayons."

----

"I would like to know if Newton or Rockdale deputies could try to do some traffic directing at the 4-way of Ga. 212/20/81/Brown Bridge during the peak hours to help with traffic congestion? Since we cannot fix the roads somehow, it would sure be nice to let more than one car go at a time. I think it would help the backed up lines, especially from Conyers and to Conyers. People set and look at each other as to who goes first! Do we need to go back to traffic school?"

----

"Are there any other parents that are concerned about law enforcement in the county schools using too much force on our children? A (16-year-old) girl was Tazered on her back today at Rockdale High School as she walked away from school administrators and the resource officer. Can we talk about excessive force? Is it necessary to use a Tazer gun on a child that is not attacking anyone or causing a threat?"

----

"With government spending out of control at all levels, when will elected officials start to look at bureaucrats who waste money and the media begin to focus there also. Government is not meant to be the rich uncle to all of those who want something and can't afford it. The media worships celebrities and tears down politicians. No wonder our kids don't think much of politicians, while the real focus needs to be on government lifers (bureaucrats) who dream at night of how they can create new ways to tax and spend our money. With the amount of revenues taken in by government today there should be enough to send every kid to Harvard and pave every street with gold."

----

"What? No news story about the female student Tazed during lunch in the RCHS cafeteria on Tuesday?"

Editor's Note: Calls made to the Conyers Police Department seeking information about the incident were not returned until Thursday morning. A story appeared on the front page of the Friday, May 16, edition of the Citizen.

----

"The Tahoe Must Go! The Tahoe Must Go! The Tahoe Must Go! Why on earth is the school system providing a car for King, anyway? What's wrong with driving his own car and recording his own mileage like everyone else?"

----

"Since when do extracurricular clubs/sports teams choose rising sophomores and juniors to be their captains or hold officer positions, when these clubs have rising seniors that have been with that activity longer and have devoted a lot more of their time to the club, and get no officer positions, but it's OK for underclassmen to fill those slots up?"

----

"In last week's Citizen Poll, there were several comments about a school superintendent getting a free SUV. There are other "employees" of Rockdale that are also given new vehicles with free insurance, and gas as well. I'm sure there are many more that I am not aware of. There are at least seven of these "free" vehicles that I know of given to these people who really have no need for them. I know I'm expected to provide my own transportation to and from my place of work. I am also shocked that every one of these vehicles are SUV's. Why are we, the taxpayers of Rockdale, allowing this to go on? I'd like to know who authorizes these vehicles!"

----

"To the person who doesn't have a problem with the sheriff and superintendent having an SUV, but wants to make all the students at Heritage, Rockdale, and Salem walk or ride the bus to school: Have you ever considered that if every student at all three high schools were to ride a bus, there would be a huge increase in the amount of buses needed? Yeah, and riding a school bus is definitely going to keep you in shape, good point! And maybe if RCPS buses were actually safer to ride students would want to ride them. I don't mind the sheriff having an SUV to drive, because he actually does good for Rockdale. However, King has done nothing but mess up the school system."

----

"I am amazed that a pedophile has the audacity to run for public office, especially within the Board of Education. Horace Gresham has single-handly convinced me to home-school my child."

----

"My comment is this: we spend a lot of time judging people and I am a little bit tired of hearing about the superintendent and what he is or is not doing. The vehicle is not an issue, but the newspaper and the other people have made it an issue. Other government officials have vehicles and are constantly changing them and getting newer vehicles, but nothing has ever been said about those. When will we wake up and realize that all of this talking is a bunch of nonsense?"

----

"I would like to thank your staff reporter Crystal Tatum for the articles she is doing on Horace Gresham. Hopefully, enough of the citizens in Newton County will see the paper and will not let this pedophile get voted into office."

----

"I see where Mike Crotts is running for office again. Did he ever move out of that lady's basement over here in Conyers?"

Editor's Note: Mike Crotts has purchased a house in Newton County and filed for homestead exemption there in January.

----

"I wish the city of Conyers would spend some of that money that they have and fix up the bumps they have around the city. Especially on Milstead Road. If you don't know where they are, just look where the oil has dropped off the cars as they go over the bump. Give the citizens a break. Some of them need kidney belts to ride through the city of Conyers. It would be money well spent."
