Gov. Sonny Perdue, center, recently signed Senate Bill 544, legislation to provide property tax relief for Newton County senior citizens. The bill, if approved by voters, will allow seniors over age 65 with an adjusted gross income of $25,000 or less to be granted a homestead exemption from county ad valorem taxes in the amount of $30,000. The governor's signature paves the way for the issue to be placed on the November ballot. Also pictured are State Sen. John Douglas, R-Social Circle, right, the bill's author, and State Rep. John Lunsford, R-McDonough, left.More like this story
