CONYERS - Two residential fires broke out Thursday within about six minutes of each other.
Deputy Chief Mike Lee said units with the Rockdale County Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 1434 Spring Mill Cove off Pine Log Road about 2:02 p.m. "Investigators said it appeared the fire was caused by a candle in the upstairs bedroom area," Lee said. "It appears the mattress caught on fire." Lee said most of the damage to the duplex was caused by smoke, and fire crews did not leave the scene until after 3:30 p.m. He said fire investigators estimate that about $30,000 of damage was done to the building valued at $100,000. The second fire in Conyers was reported at 2:08 p.m. at 960 Travis St. The fire was apparently caused by food left on the stove. Damage in this case was relatively minimal, Lee said, estimated at about $500. He said the damage was isolated to the stove and the kitchen area.More like this story
