Marks takes third at state in triple jump

ALBANY - Newton High School's Shay Marks had the top finish of the local performers competing at the state track meet Saturday at Hugh Mills Stadium.

Competing against the best from Class AAAAA, Marks took third place in the triple jump with a leap of 37 feet, 9 inches.

Newton finished 27th overall at the meet.

Of the local schools competing in the Class AAAA division, Eastside had the best finish, taking 28th.

Eastside was led by its 1,600 relay team which placed fifth overall. The team, which consists of Asia Palmer, Bria Anthony, Kimberly Thomas and Whitney Martin, finished the race in 4 minutes, 6.15 seconds.

Other local competitors with solid showings at state included Heritage's Miauna Jones and Alcovy's Tahapenes Outlaw.

Jones took sixth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.46 seconds, while Outlaw placed eighth in the 100-meter dash in 12.57.
