COVINGTON - The Georgia Department of Transportation has announced that motorists on Interstate 20 will be detoured at Ga. Highway 142 from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, while work to remove the old highway bridge over I-20 resumes.
Traffic on I-20 at Ga. 142 will be detoured onto the on and off ramps while the bridge demolition work is in progress, according to a press release issued by the DOT. Traffic control personnel will be positioned at the top of each ramp to help facilitate the movement of traffic. Motorists should expect minimal delays, the press release said. In other news, traffic on Alcovy Road will be shifted Tuesday. Traffic will be moved to the east side of the road to allow for construction on the west side. A spokeswoman with the DOT did not return calls seeking additional information on the projects. Georgia DOT urges travelers to call 511 for updated information about these or any other construction projects on interstates and state routes. Georgia 511 is a free phone service that provides real time traffic and travel information statewide, such as traffic conditions, incidents, lane closures and delays due to inclement weather. Callers can also be transfered to operators to request assistance or report incidents 24 hours a day, seven days a week. More information is available at www.511ga.org.
