Covington Rotary celebrates top 10 Newton students

COVINGTON - The Rotary Club of Covington will honor the top 10 students from each of Newton County's three high schools Tuesday.

The club will sponsor a reception in honor of the 30 students at 6:30 p.m. at Alcovy High School. The top 10 students from each school are determined based on their grade point averages.

The event will allow the students, their parents and each student's favorite teacher to enjoy refreshments and talks from several guest speakers.

"We don't really have a keynote speaker this year," like last year's Georgia School Superintendent Kathy Cox, Rotary Club President Ricky Adams said.

This year, Newton County School System Superintendent Steven Whatley and Rotarian Bob Stafford will address the students.

Also, Tristan Gray, a foreign exchange student from Whakatane, New Zealand, attending the University of Georgia sponsored by the Rotary Club of Covington, the Rotary Club of Rockdale and the Conyers Rotary Club, will speak to students about his college experience and how he came to America in August.

"He will talk about his experiences in the Georgia Rotary Student Program and what Rotary has done for him this year," Adams said.

Each student also will receive a certificate at the program.

This is the 43rd year Covington Rotarians have honored Newton County's top 10 students. It was started in 1965 by Rotarians Jim Purcell and Whit Richardson.
