College Notebook: Berry's McCalley earns SSAC pitching honor

Berry College's Matt McCalley was named the Southern States Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday.

During Berry's spring break, the former Heritage standout had a hand in four of his team's five victories. He is the first Berry pitcher to win the award this season.

In his four appearances, McCalley did not allow any runs, fanned six opponents and gave up only two hits.

He picked his first save of the week with a strong 22/3 innings against Auburn-Montgomery, holding on for a 7-6 victory.

The next day, he saved a 6-4 victory over Auburn-Montgomery with a game-ending double play.

Against Belhaven, McCalley pitched two scoreless innings and had two strikeouts as Berry rallied from a 2-0 deficit for a 3-2 victory giving him the win.

In his next game, McCalley closed out a 5-3 victory over Thomas for his third save.

His record now stands at 3-0 this season with five saves for the Vikings.


Heritage players making impact at Darton

Four former Heritage baseball players - Trent Dooley, Adam Duncan, Taylor Whitenton and Brent Allen - are all making an impact this season for Darton College.

After 34 games, Dooley, a freshman, was batting a team-high .404 with 42 hits, two home runs and 25 RBIs.

Duncan, a sophomore, was hitting .283 while leading the team in home runs with four and RBIs with 28.

On the mound, Whitenton is 2-1 with one save and a 1.35 ERA for the Cavaliers. Allen is 2-4 in 10 starts on the hill with a 3.65 ERA and one shutout.

Owens now 4-1 for Bobcats

Former Heritage pitcher Brandon Owens earned a win in relief for Georgia College and State University in a 5-2 decision over the University of South Carolina at Aiken last Saturday.

Owens improved to 4-1 this season for the Bobcats.


Georgia State's Lee second in NCAA RBI leaders

Eastside's Catherine Lee is having a banner season for Georgia State University.

The freshman catcher ranks second in NCAA Division I softball, averaging 1.36 RBIs per game. Lee has driven in 42 runs in 30 games for the Lady Panthers.

She is third on the squad in batting with a .412 average.

On Monday, Lee belted her 10th home run in of the season in a doubleheader sweep of Harvard. She is now just two homers short of the Georgia State school record.

Lee finished the twin bill 5-for-7. She had four RBIs in the first game.

Former Eastside pitcher Ashley Cowan improved her record to 5-1 this season by picking up a victory in relief in Georgia State's 6-5 triumph over Harvard in the second game.

Cowan pitched 42/3 innings, allowing only one run and striking out four.

Chandler wins four games

Standout Georgia College and State University pitcher Mandy Chandler had another productive week, notching three victories in four games to improve her record this season to 16-3.

During game one of a doubleheader against the University of South Carolina at Aiken, Chandler struck out 11 opponents and only gave up two hits in a 1-0 victory.

Although GCSU lost to North Georgia College, Chandler pitched the full seven innings, fanning seven batters while allowing four hits and two unearned runs.

She also tossed a four-hitter in a 6-2 victory over Lander.

Chandler finished up her impressive week against Clark Atlanta, as she struck out 11 and allowed only one run in a 5-1 win.

Padgett notches RBI

for Gordon

Rockdale's Keeli Padgett recorded an RBI single for Gordon College in last Saturday's 11-5 loss to Darton.

Padgett finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate for Gordon College.


Jones finishes 24th for Mercer

Heritage's Bill Jones finished 24th for Mercer University in the USA Spring Classic at Herron Lakes Country Club in Mobile, Ala.

Jones had the Bears' best finish with a three-round total of 227. His lowest round was an even-par 72 in the second round.
