Seminoles top Tigers on baseball diamond

CONYERS - Alcovy grabbed a quick lead over Salem on Wednesday, but the lead didn't last as the Seminoles scored 11 unanswered runs and topped the Tigers 11-1 in six innings at Salem.

Six errors spelled doom for the Tigers against a Salem team that moved to 8-2 in Region 8-AAAA with the win.

"We hit the ball hard. We came out and put pressure on them (Alcovy)," Salem coach Chris Davis said. "They made a few mistakes and we capitalized. We had a much better game offensively than we've had in the past few games."

After Alcovy's Taylor Jackson, the first batter of the game, smashed a home run and gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead, Salem's offense opened up the flood gates.

The Seminoles struck for two runs in the bottom of the first inning and five in the second and built a 7-1 lead.

Meanwhile, Salem's pitching and defense worked its way through five straight scoreless innings.

"The pitching was fine. We threw strikes and we played defense," Davis said. "Overall, I'm real pleased."

Salem put the icing on the cake in the bottom of the sixth with four more runs, forcing the game to be called at 11-1.

The two runs in the first inning came off an RBI double by Drew Dentler and a sacrifice fly RBI by Jake Dyer.

In the second inning, Logan Singleton was hit by a pitch. After Cody Davis walked, Jonathan Brewer advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt. The first run of the inning was scored on a sacrifice fly RBI by Dustin Dunlop. The Tigers spaced two errors around a Dentler single and two more runs scored. The final two runs of the inning came off the bat of Brandon Crumbley, who belted a two-run double.

The final runs of the game came in the sixth off a two-run single by Corey Womack, an RBI single by Dentler and an Alcovy throwing error.

Crumbley got the win on the mound for Salem, giving up one run on four hits in 4 1/3 innings of work. He fanned three batters. Alcovy's Cody Bala took the loss despite giving up just two earned runs.
