Pats, Lady Rams lead the field after first day of event

COVINGTON - The Heritage boys and the Newton girls are in the lead after the first day of the Citizen Challenge track meet in cold and windy conditions Monday at Newton High School.

On the boys' side, the Patriots won four events and compiled 81 points during the field events as well as the 3,200-meter run and 3,200-meter relay. Heritage owns a 22-point lead over defending champion Eastside and Newton heading into today's track finals.

The Lady Rams, on the other hand, won five individual events and tallied 86 points, building a 34-point lead over Alcovy at 52 points. Heritage is third with 47 and Eastside is fourth with 42. Newton is the defending girls champion.

Senior distance-running standout Shuaib Winters started the meet off with a bang for Heritage, breaking his own record in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 9 minutes, 57.22 seconds. He shaved 6.98 seconds off the record he set last year.

Heritage's Morgan Tabb won the most stirring individual battle, besting Newton's Tyler Ransom in the pole vault. Tabb and Ransom both tied the meet record of 12 feet, but then Tabb won the tiebreaker when he cleared at 11 feet, 7 inches and Ransom did not.

Senior Mikel Hunter added the other Heritage victory in the high jump at 6 feet.

Eastside's Jamario Parks set a new meet record in the long jump with an effort of 22 feet, 1/4 inch, one of four event victories for the Eagles.

Senior Jordan Ritchey swept both the shot put (45 feet, 11 inches) and the discus (119 feet, 8 inches) for Eastside. The Eagles also claimed the inaugural victory 3,200-meter relay - a new meet event - in 8 minutes, 31.58 seconds.

Lavon Allen recorded Rockdale's only victory in the triple jump by setting a new meet record at 44 feet, 81/4 inches.

On the girls' side, Newton's Shay Marks turned in record-setting performances in the long jump and the triple jump. She broke her own record in the long jump with an effort of 18 feet, 73/4 inches. And then she followed with a record-setting effort of 38 feet, 8 inches in the triple jump.

Other Lady Rams claiming event victories were Shandria Usher in the shot put (34 feet, 9 inches), Chaconna Marks in the discus (104 feet, 5 inches) and Ameryst Armstead in the 3,200-meter run (12 minutes, 48 seconds).

Alcovy's Tiffany Moody chalked up a pair of victories in the high jump (4 feet, 8 inches) and the pole vault (7 feet, 6 inches).

Heritage claimed its only victory in the inaugural running of the girls 3,200-meter relay in 11 minutes, 27:22 seconds.
