COVINGTON - The Newton County Coroner's Office has released the identity of one of the victims killed Thursday afternoon in a head-on collision on County Road 213 near Ga. Highway 36.
Vivian Mitchell, 42, of Covington was driving a black Toyota Camry northbound when a white Ford F-250 pickup truck crossed over into her lane of travel, according to the Georgia State Patrol. The official identification of the driver of the pickup is being withheld, pending DNA testing by the Georgia State Crime Lab, according to Deputy Coroner Tommy Davis. The pickup was "fully involved" in flames when firefighters from the Newton County Fire Service arrived at the scene, said Fire Chief Mike Satterfield. Both drivers were killed on impact, a GSP spokesman said. Authorities were forced to shut down CR 213 for a short period of time to conduct an accident investigation and clean up what remained of the two vehicles. The accident, which occurred about 2 p.m., reportedly happened somewhere between Dixie Road and Ga. 36. Staff reporter Joel Griffin contributed to this article.
