Two motorists die in fiery crash on County Road 213

COVINGTON - Two people were killed Thursday afternoon when a pickup and a sedan traveling in opposite directions on County Road 213 near Ga. Highway 36 were involved in a collision.

Newton County Fire Service firefighters arrived to find the pickup in flames. Newton County Fire Chief Mike Satterfield described the truck as being "fully involved" and requiring firefighters to extinguish the blaze.

According to a spokesman with the Georgia State Patrol, the driver of the white Ford F-250 pickup was traveling south when the truck crossed over to the northbound lane and hit the sedan, identified as a black Toyota Camry. Both drivers were killed on impact, he said.

According to Mark Mitchell, spokesman for the Newton County Sheriff's Office, the drivers of the vehicles, both of whom are believed to be local residents, are the only confirmed occupants and fatalities at this time.

Authorities were forced to shut down CR 213 for a short period of time to conduct an accident investigation and clean up what remained of the two vehicles.

The accident, which occurred about 2 p.m., reportedly happened somewhere between Dixie Road and Ga. 36.

The victims' names were withheld Thursday afternoon pending notification of next of kin.
