The Rockdale Retired Educators Association is inviting applicants to apply for its annual scholarships to be presented again this year to deserving college students who have completed at least one year of college and who are majoring in education.
This past year, the Rockdale Retired Educators Association suffered the loss of one of its most active and beloved members, Henry Gibbs. Gibbs worked as a teacher, administrator and principal in the Rockdale County Public Schools.
After retirement, he continued to serve as an active member of the Rockdale Retired Educators Association. Upon his death, his family requested donations be made to the group's scholarship fund, honoring his life by helping to further the education of deserving students.
RREA is proud to rename its annual scholarship in his memory. The Henry Gibbs RREA scholarship is given annually by this association to deserving college student. Its goal as retired educators is to encourage college students who have decided to become teachers.
Nominees must have graduated from a high school in Rockdale County. They must provide a transcript of their college grades and demonstrate a definite financial need. Nominations may be made by Rockdale County residents and must be endorsed by a high school counselor.
Students may apply for and be awarded the scholarship for three years by submitting a new application each year. Scholarship funds will be deposited in the students' accounts at the colleges they attend.
Applications may be obtained from Joanna Farmer, the committee chairwoman, by contacting her at 770-483-6761 or by mail at 3812 Rosemary Lane, Conyers, GA 30013. Applications must be returned by March 31.
The scholarship will be presented at the May meeting of the RREA after the committee has reviewed the applications and selected the recipients. Each recipient's name will be added to a plaque, displayed in the high school where the student graduated. The display will begin the day following the presentation of the scholarship and end in April of the following year.
