Lady Rams place second in track meet

COVINGTON - The Newton first track team finished second in a six-team meet Tuesday.

Luella won the event with 112 points followed by Newton (97), Redan (96), Alcovy (47), Ola (36) and Eastside (29).

Newton had six first-place finishes with Shay Marks taking first in three events and Shandria Usher placing first twice.

Marks finished first in the long jump (18 feet, 4 inches), the triple jump (37 feet, 51/4 inches) and the 100-meter dash (11.90 seconds).

Usher won both of the throwing events, taking the discus at 97 feet, 6 inches and winning the shot put taking the shot put for a 33-foot, half-inch ride.

Ameryst Armstead was the Lady Rams' other event winner, prevailing in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 12:33.

Newton also had two second-place finishes, both by Chaconna Marks in the discus and the shot put.

Fourth-place finishes for Newton were provided by Loren Wilkens in the triple jump and 800-meter run and Armstead in the 1,600-meter run.

Tiffany Moody scored a pair of firsts for Alcovy, winning the high jump with an effort of 5 feet, 6 inches and the pole vault.

The Lady Tigers' Nehemie Sagesse also had second- and third-place finishes in the pole vault and high jump.

Taylor Reese and Whitney Martin recorded the top finishes for Eastside. Reese had a third place finish in the discus with a distance of 80 feet, 5 inches, while Martin produced a third in the 400-meter dash in 1:00.37.
