CONYERS - Discovery of law enforcement equipment in a car reported stolen out of Newton County had Rockdale investigators scratching their heads. The vehicle was found abandoned in a church parking lot with the motor running and two flat tires.
Investigators with the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office released few details concerning the incident, citing the nature of the ongoing investigation.
According to RCSO spokeswoman Sgt. Jodi Shupe, a deputy responding to a call at 1:15 p.m. Monday and found a red Nissan Quest abandoned in the parking lot of the North Rockdale Baptist Church, located at 3130 Ga. Highway 138, N.E.
The car appeared to have left the roadway for an unknown reason and struck a curb before coming to a stop in the parking lot. Both driver and front passenger doors were open, and the vehicle was still in drive, Shupe said.
Also, several law enforcement items were found inside the car that was reported stolen out of a patrol car of a RCSO deputy earlier that day.
Shupe declined to say what the items found were or the circumstances surrounding their theft. She said the investigation was in it's early stages and "there is a lot of unknowns."
She also declined to identify the deputy involved and said releasing that information could affect the investigation, but said there was no wrongdoing on the deputy's part.
"We are not commenting on the case, but there is no reason that the deputy would be disciplined. He did nothing wrong," she said. "He was the victim of a crime. I can tell you many of the items have been recovered, and we are assisting Newton County in the case."
Anyone with information pertaining to this case is asked to contact the sheriff's office at 770-918-6700.
