COVINGTON - City of Covington utility customers will soon be able to pay their bills via credit or debit cards.
The change should go into effect within 30 to 45 days, according to Bobby Johnson, the city's system information manager. "We've had a lot of response back from customers concerned about us not taking credit cards or debit cards," Johnson said. "Our past revenue system wouldn't let us do it." Customers will also be able to have payments automatically charged to their credit cards each month, Johnson said. "Hopefully, it will save some foot traffic coming into the lobby (at City Hall)," he said. Customers who take advantage of credit or debit card payments will be charged a 2.95 percent convenience fee, he added. By the end of the year, customers also will have the added convenience of being able to pay bills online or via phone. The city may be able to save on paper costs by e-mailing monthly bills as well, Johnson said. The city already has an automated clearinghouse payment option, in which payments are withdrawn directly out of customers' checking accounts.
