CONYERS - Consistency was the name of the game for the Salem boys golf team as they had four scores in the 40s in a 167-198 win over Newton on Monday at The Highland Golf Club.
The Salem girls also had an easy time against Newton in their 102-130 win to get the sweep.
Salem boys coach Chad Estes said that he wants his team to be able to shoot 40 or below. It looks like they're on target to do that as all six players were in the 40s with the highest score a 44.
"I was pleased, the guys are on the right track," Estes said. "It was a pretty windy day out here, so conditions weren't optimum. It was a tough day. They did a good job of trying to get where we want."
Kyle Reagan and Lane Keenan led the Salem boys with pair of 40s. Even though Sharvil Mehta did not have the lowest score for the boys with a 43, he had the birdies on the 347-yard, par4 third hole and the 407-yard, par 4 eighth hole.
Both Miles Goldman and Stephen Jackson had 44s to complete Salem's score.
"It's early in the season, but I'm pleased right now. They just have to keeping working on their game and be consistent," Estes said.
Newton's Landen Cheek had birdies on the 146-yard par 3 sixth hole and 452-yard par 5 ninth hole to post a 1-over-par 37.
While Payton Bundy kept it close with a 45, first-year varsity players Paige Morgan and George Clackum were unable to keep pace, shooting a 55 and 61.
In the girls match, Salem's Dari Goldman posted a score which would've been competitive with the boys scores, shooting a 43. Her teammate, Erin Knowles, had a little bit of trouble on the greens, but still managed to post a lower score than both Newton girls.
Knowles finished the front nine with a 59, while Newton's Ashley Anthony had a 64 and Adrienne Kitchens added a 66.
"The girls are extremely self motivated and I know that they're going to improve. We just need to practice more," Newton girls coach Kay Wright said. "I think if we get out and practice more, they'll get their swing back. We're just a little rusty right now."
