COVINGTON - A mother of three young children was arrested and charged with cruelty to children in the second degree last week after she allegedly left her kids home alone.
A Department of Family and Child Services worker reportedly found the young children, who range in age from 2 months to 2 years, when she went to their home on Pebble Brook Court for an interview Friday morning. "DFACS went to do a follow up (concerning a previous report), and (the worker) could not get an adult to come to the door," said Investigator Sharron Stewart, spokeswoman for the Newton County Sheriff's Office. "She, however, did observe two small juveniles through the door. She contacted the sheriff's office, and we went out, and sure enough, no adult was there." Stewart said investigators were able to contact the children's parents about an hour after they responded to the scene. According to Stewart, the parents gave conflicting statements as to why the children were left alone. The children's mother, Cornelia Wilkerson, 24, was subsequently taken into custody. No charges have been filed against the father. Stewart said the case is still under investigation. Joel Griffin can be reached at joel.griffin@newtoncitizen.com.More like this story
