COVINGTON - For Alcovy golf coach Chris Newsham, this year's goal is simple: Show steady improvement and hammer out some consistency.
The Tigers took steps in that direction Monday afternoon as the boys defeated Monroe Area 185-197 at Indian Creek Golf Club
"They're coming along and they're showing improvement," Newsham said. "I know my one and two guys can play better, they played better in the first match. But what's good is the three and four guys are showing progress."
Oran Allen and Garek Cochran led the Tiger foursome with a 46s while Matt Moore wasn't far behind with a 47. Jeffrey Hexom rounded out the scoring with a 50.
"My number four guy knocked 10 shots off from the last time he played and that's good," Newsham said. "If he can go out and shoot 45 or 46 every time, then it gives us a chance to win by 10 or 12 shots like we did today."
Both Moore and Allen were solid, posting three pars to pace the Tigers, who have the luxury of playing six quality players compared to last year when they were only able to field four.
Alcovy (2-1) has already exceeded last year's win total by two, as it was unable to crack the win column in its inaugural season under Newsham.
But the Tigers coach knows building a consistently competitive program takes time.
"We didn't win a match all year last year and won two in three tries so that's a big improvement," he said. "My goal each year that I do this is to get the younger kids that are coming up and have a chance to work with them for two, three or four years. We've got four or five freshman out here and hopefully, when the golf season is over, they'll keep playing and get better."
The Alcovy girls squad won by forfeit as Monroe Area did not travel a girls team. The Lady Tigers used the match as a practice round and did not record the final scores.
