COVINGTON - An Alcovy High student has been charged with aggravated assault after he allegedly stomped a fellow student unconscious.
According to Lt. Mark Mitchell, spokesman for the Newton County Sheriff's Office, the students, both 14-years-old males, became involved in an altercation in a hallway at the school.
One of the teens involved in the fight was able to knock the other down, at which time he began "stomping" and "kicking" him in the head, Mitchell said.
"If you use your feet and hands in that manner ... you can be charged with aggravated assault," he said.
By the time the school resource officer arrived, the victim was unconscious. He eventually regained consciousness, however, and is reportedly doing fine.
Both of the students involved are ninth-graders.
"The aggressor was suspended to a hearing. Safety is our primary concern," said Sherri Viniard, spokeswoman for the Newton County School System. "Physical violence of any kind will not be tolerated in our schools."
In other crime news, a 15-year-old student at Veterans Middle School is facing several criminal charges after he allegedly touched a girl on the buttocks and then struck her in the face last month.
About 2 p.m. Feb. 13, Deputy Sammy Banks was contacted by one of the school's administrators about the incident, which had reportedly occurred in a classroom on the eighth-grade hallway, he said in an incident report.
"It was reported to the resource officer that a male student had inappropriately touched a female student on the buttocks," said Mitchell, the NCSO spokesman.
According to Mitchell, after the 13-year-old victim confronted the boy, he reportedly struck her in the mouth.
Following an investigation by the deputy, the boy was arrested and charged with sexual battery and battery.
According to Viniard, both students involved in the incident are eighth-graders. Viniard said the suspect was suspended 10 days to a formal hearing.
"This type of behavior is completely unacceptable," she said.
