T-League teams continue in tourney

GRAYSON - Two of the three Newton County T-League teams are enjoying the ranks of the undefeated as the 6-U teams play for a berth in the state tournament.

The loss by the Newton Southern came at the hands of another Newton team, the Newton American, in the first round of the tournament.

After their loss, the Southern came back to run-rule Brookwood, winning by 11 runs.

The American team also run-ruled their next opponent, shutting out Norcross 11-0.

The Newton National won their opening night game against Mountain Park before getting a bye.

Former Eastside golf star alternate for GSGA tourney

BOGART - Former Eastside golfer Taylor Smith shot a 76 and finished in a four-way tie for the 14th and final spot in the GSGA Amateur qualifier at Jennings Mill Country Club Monday.

Smith lost to Marietta's Scott Davenport for the final spot but beat out Douglasville's John Nemanich and Athens' Nicholas Stiles for the first alternate position.

As first alternate, Smith is first in line if a player from the Jennings Mill site cannot advance to the amateur tournament at Idle Hour Club in Macon starting July 10.

If he makes it, he will join Covington's Bill Jones, who qualified by shooting a 72 at Idle Hour on June 9.

Tech names new football radio team

ATLANTA - Rick Strom is moving from sideline reporter to the broadcast booth to serve as the new color analyst for Georgia Tech's radio broadcasts in 2008.

Strom, a quarterback at Georgia Tech from 1983-87, will replace Jeff Van Note as the partner for play-by-play announcer Wes Durham. Van Note, who has been part of the broadcast team since 2004, decided to devote more time to his family and his ongoing duties with the Atlanta Falcons broadcast team, according to Tuesday's announcement by Tech and ISP Sports.

Jeff Woolverton of Atlanta's sports talk station 790 AM 'The Zone' was named the new sideline reporter. Woolverton also will co-host Tech's pregame show.

Falcons release C Doug Datish

ATLANTA - For the second time in seven days, the Atlanta Falcons are cutting loose a recent draft pick.

The Falcons released center Doug Datish, a sixth-round pick in 2007 who never played with the team, on Monday.
