Local to sing at ballgame

COVINGTON - Today, Covington country singer/songwriter Hannah Thomas will sing before her largest audience yet.

She will perform at Turner Field before and during the Atlanta Braves' game against the Milwaukee Brewers, which starts at 1 p.m.

Thomas, an 18-year old "sophisticated country" rock and Blues artist, will perform for about 45 minutes starting at 11:30 a.m. on the Turner Field Fan Plaza inside the stadium. Multi-instrumentalist David Ellis will accompany her during the set.

Before the game starts, she will sing the National Anthem on the field.

"I was excited and kind of nervous," Thomas said about how she felt when Braves officials asked her to perform at the game. "That's one song you don't want to mess up. I felt honored, though."

She's sang the national anthem before, but never at this level, she said.

Still, she's not nervous, even though she's never even visited Turner Field for a Braves game before.

"I do better in front of bigger crowds," she said. "It's just the feeling I get and getting to share my music with people and see the crowd's response."

Since performing publicly for about four years, Thomas already has performed at music venues in Atlanta and around the state and in Nashville and other cities and states. She regularly plays at various locations around Covington and Conyers.

"Since I've been performing, people are usually into it, so I'm not nervous anymore; I'm more pumped up," she said.

During the pregame concert, she plans to sing a few of her cover songs since the crowd might not be familiar with music from her two albums.

"I'm just going to do my best and give 100 percent," she said.

Even though she feels being asked to sing at a Braves game is a great accomplishment, she has bigger goals.

"I really want to one day get my songs on the radio and be able to perform for audiences all over the world or at least write for other artists," she said. "I've been into music ever since I could talk; I made my mind up when I was younger that I wanted to write songs - it's my No. 1 passion."

She won the Atlanta Opry Talent Showcase and the Atlanta Region Colgate Country Showdown in 2007 and also received a nomination for the 2007 Top Teen Country Artist in Georgia and has performed on several television and radio shows.

A schedule of her upcoming performances is listed on her Web site, www.myspace.com/hannahthomasmusic.
