COVINGTON - Two of the three Newton County Pee Wee teams, ages 8 and under, will advance to the state championship starting Saturday.
The Newton American team made it out of Morgan County as the champions while the Newton National team worked its way to the big tournament after finishing second from the Warner Robins site. The Newton American started the tournament beating the Newton Southern team 3-1. From there the American team went on to defeat Monroe County and Crawford County to advance to the semifinals. After losing to the Newton American, the Newton Southern won their next game on a forfeit before getting a win over the North Macon National, putting both Newton teams in the semifinals. In the semis, Monroe County bested Crawford County to get to the championship game. In the other game, Newton American sent Newton Southern packing after beating them for the second time. The Newton American won that game 5-4. In the championship game, Newton American squashed Monroe County 11-2 to take the title. At Warner Robins, the Newton National started the day with a win over Jones County. The second day Newton National beat North Macon American and then Taylor County. On its way to the championship game the Newton National team handed Jones County its second loss. In the championship game, the Newton National got swept by the North Macon American to finish in second place. "From the Warner Robins and Monroe County tournament, the two second-place teams played a two-out-of-three series. The winner qualified for state," Newton County Recreation Coordinator Judd Hall said. "Newton National won Friday night. Newton National beat Monroe County both games." The Newton American will try for the state title against the Grayson Green while the Newton American will play the Grayson Blue. Both games begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Jasper County.
