DOUGLASVILLE - Both Conyers Post 77 and Rockdale Post 77 were in action Friday in the first day of the POW-MIA Tournament in Douglasville.
Rockdale played just one game on the day and captured a narrow 4-3 win over Vienna.
Conyers didn't fare as well, dropping both of its games Friday.
Against Vienna, Rockdale trailed most of the game. It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth that Rockdale rallied from a 3-1 deficit and took a 4-3 lead. Corbin Tucker provided the go-ahead RBI in the win.
Rockdale's Jeremy Riehn got the win on the mound after pitching 2/3 of an inning in the top half of the fifth.
Rockdale manager Jack Murphy said he was pleased to get the win, even though his team didn't play as fundamentally sound as he would have liked.
"We made about five errors and put ourselves in a bind," Murphy said. "If it wasn't for a few key hits and some pretty good pitching, we wouldn't have been able to hold on for the win."
Meanwhile, Conyers dropped its first game of the tournament, losing a 9-1 decision to Douglasville.
Conyers scored its only run in the seventh inning off an RBI groundout by Chunk Smith, which scored Taylor Lamb.
Travis Tarleton was the top pitcher for Conyers, allowing just two earned runs in six innings of work.
Errors hurt Conyers in the loss, Bagwell said.
"We made too many mistakes, too many errors. That was pretty much our M.O. the whole game," he said.
Conyers' second game of the day was a much closer contest.
But the result was the same as Conyers dropped a 5-3 decision to Gainesville.
Conyers went up 1-0 in the top of the second when Patrick Jansen's RBI groundout plated Nick Matteen. However, Gainesville tied it up in the bottom half of the inning.
Neither team scored again until the top of sixth when Gainesville struck for four runs and took a 5-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Conyers pulled within two after scoring two runs off RBIs by Tarleton and Lamb.
But that was as close as Conyers got as Gainesville held on for the win.
Kelvan Diaz got the loss despite allowing just one earned run in seven innings of work. He fanned also fanned eight batters.
Both Conyers and Rockdale play again today.
Conyers faces Shelbyville (Tenn.) at 9 a.m. and Dothan (Ala.) at 11:45 a.m. Rockdale plays Albany and Alpharetta.
