Cell Phones

Project ReNeWal DVIP, a battered women's shelter serving Rockdale, Newton and Walton counties, is collecting used cell phones. The local drop off location is Conyers Travel, 1540 Ga. Highway 138, Suite 1-A, located in the Bank of America building.

Special Olympics

Covington AA

The Covington Group-Alcoholics Anonymous meets seven days a week at noon, 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Serenity House, 10150 Atlanta Road in Covington. Newcomers are welcome. Call 770-289-2820.

Abbey Hospice

Abbey Hospice, 215 Azalea Court in Social Circle, is seeking volunteers to help by reading and talking to patients, doing office work and running errands. Call 770-464-5858.

Heartland Hospice

Heartland Hospice, formerly Portsbridge Hospice, is seeking volunteers to spend time with terminally ill patients. Training will be provided. Activities include listening, reading and praying or, if preferred, office or maintenance duties. Especially needed are donations of twin bedding and volunteers who can assist with office duties, mail-outs, filing and receptionist duties. Call 770-922-8767.

Creative Volunteers

Creative Ministries Thrift Store, 1279 Green St. in Conyers, is seeking donations of working appliances and furniture in good condition. Call 770-929-1000 for pickup of large items. Donations of clothing and small items may be dropped off at the store. The ministry assists troubled youth. Also, volunteers are needed to help receive, sort and price clothing two days a week. Store hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

East Metro Baseball

To make a donation of a used computer, all 770-922-6768 for eligible components, drop off information and next collection date.


Newton County residents only may recycle household electronics, paints and dispose of pesticides on the first Saturday of each month. No TVs or commercial wastes accepted. The Newton County Landfill will accept these items from 8 a.m. until noon. Call 770-786-5808 for more information.

Friends of the Library

Friends of the Library monthly book sales will resume at the Nancy Guinn Memorial Library's new temporary location, starting June 14. The sales are the second Saturday of each month. Hospital Volunteers Needed

Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks, especially individuals to work at the information desks. Duties include greeting patients and visitors, answering phones, delivering flowers, assisting with mailings and miscellaneous clerical support Call the Rockdale Medical Center's Auxiliary office at 770-918-3307.

Football/Cheerleader Program

Attn. Veterans

Pet Food Drive

Rockdale County Animal Care and Control is collecting donations of canned dog and cat food, as well as used bath towels. The shelter is located at 1506 Rockbridge Road. Call 770-785-5927 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Critical Need

Volunteers are needed to deliver Meals on Wheels to homebound senior citizens once a week. Routes take about one hour. Meals are delivered Monday through Friday. Meal pickup time is 10:30 a.m. Several routes are open. There is a critical need for drivers. Call Connie Rae at 770-922-4633.

Habitat Store

Habitat for Humanity Conyers-Rockdale operates a surplus store, located at 1117 West Ave. in the Rockdale Plaza Shopping Center. Habitat sells used appliances, electrical and electronic devices in working order, furniture, lamps, tools, etc. The store is open on Thursdays, Friday and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 770-785-7675 to request information or to schedule a donation or pickup.

Breakfast Volunteer

Several voting precincts and locations in Newton County have changed, including Cedar Shoals, Stansells, Almon, Brick Store, Fairview and a few in Buck Creek. Clothes Closet

Rockdale Community Clothes Closet, 1050 Oakland Ave., has an immediate need for all types of winter clothes, warm bedding and space heaters. Drop-off hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Newton Reads

Volunteers are needed to help an adult learn to read or improve their math skills. Training and materials will be provided. Call Newton Reads at 678-342-7943.

Literacy Action
