Construction on the new Hightower Trail Bridge over Gum Creek has begun. The bridge was closed by the county in August 2006 due to safety concerns.

"It's going to be a beautiful, double-arched, concrete bridge with the sides of the bridge cast to look like a stone wall, and it will be dyed to look like the rocks in the stream below," County Engineer Kevin Walter said. The new bridge is expected to be completed by the end of summer, Walter said.

This $3 million crane was brought in to lift and set into place each pre-cast piece of concrete for the bridge, similar to how a prefabricated house is constructed. Each piece of concrete weighs 35 tons, according to Walter. The crane has a capacity of 550 tons and is about as heavy as the county's largest fire engine, he said. "It's the biggest crane we've ever seen in Newton County."
