Library plans summer reading fun

Conyers - Kids may be out of school for the summer, but they can still have a little fun at the library.

The Nancy Guinn Memorial Library in Conyers is seeing a surge of school-aged children and their parents since school let out at the end of May.

"We definitely have a lot of parents bring their kids in during the school year ... but the afternoons (this summer) are usually bustling and very vibrant and busy in our department," said Lauren Knowlton, youth services specialist for the library.

Knowlton, who has worked at the library for about two months, said she's very impressed by the parents and guardians bringing in their kids after school and during the summer to play educational games and check out books.

This summer, the library is holding a Wonderful Wednesday program every week in June. The events are open to the public at 10:30 a.m. and last between 30 and 45 minutes.

The first event in the series was held June 4 when the library hosted Covington resident Jeff Johnson, who played his guitar, sang and had the few hundred kids join in with him in the musical celebration.

This Wednesday, the library will present a "Latin America musical adventure" with Sabor Latino, and June 18, children and their parents can catch Ken Scott for the Magical Reading Bug. On June 25, newcomer Ken Panse will have an exotic reptile adventure at the library for the last program of the summer.

The Nancy Guinn Memorial Library also encourages children of all ages to participate in its Summer Reading Club, which started May 24.

From now until July 24, anyone under 18 can come into the library to sign up for the reading program.

Children in fifth grade and younger can sign up for the Catch the Reading Bug program, while those in sixth through 12th grades can sign up for Metamorphosis at Your Library.

For each 20 minutes spent reading, listening to an audiobook or having a parent read to them, younger children will color in a honeycomb shape on the reading log.

Each time readers get to a certain level, they can come into the library for goodies such as local vouchers for food, drinks, ice cream, skating, golf and bowling. They also will get to fill out a ticket for a grand prize: tickets to Zoo Atlanta or Chuck E. Cheese's for younger readers or, for young adults, tickets to the World of Coca-Cola.

The grand prize winner will be announced at the library's end-of-summer ice cream party, scheduled for July 24.
