OXFORD - The first ever PATA Spring Fling - Junior Tennis Tournament was held May 31 at Oxford College. Forty-two young tennis players from surrounding counties turned out for the tournament, which was open to all local juniors 18 and under.
Twenty-four boys competed in the event and were divided into four divisions. The division one winner was Logan Plumley, 8-3, over Tyler Spence. Division two winner was Lamar Dove, 4-3 (retired), over David Arrue. The winner in division three was Sam Cooper, 8-5, over Sutton Trulock. The boys division four winner was Logan Hull, 8-1, over Ryan Azar.
The 18 participating girls were divided into three divisions. The division one winner was Jennifer Mobley, 8-5, over Courtney Perry. The division two winner was Reynolds Rogers, 8-1, over Katrin Neihoff. The girls division three winner was Hannah Howell, 8-7, over Maya Tome.
The format was a one-day round robin tournament that started at 8 a.m. and ended at 3:30 p.m. After the round robin play, the top two from each division moved on to play in an eight game pro-set final. Trophies were awarded to the winner and finalist in each division. It was a hot spring day with temperatures reaching the mid-90s on the courts, which tested the players' endurance over the course of the day.
Tournament director and coordinator was Jimbo Hull and referee was Brandon Feldman, head tennis coach for Oxford College. Feldman coached the 2006 and 2007 NJCAA Men's National Champions for Oxford College.
