ATLANTA - Former Heritage golf standout Bill Jones came up a little short in his quest to qualify for the upcoming 108th U.S. Amateur Championship on Wednesday in the sectional qualifier at the Piedmont Driving Club.
Jones, a rising senior on the Mercer University golf team, had a two-round total of 2-over-par 144, finishing four shots behind the last of six qualifiers. After shooting a 2-over-par 73 in the first round, Jones followed up with even-par 71 in the second round, but it wasn't enough to catch the leaders. Conyers' Willie White also qualified for the second round after shooting a 2-over-par 73 in the first round. He finished with a two-round total of 153, which was 11-over-par. The U.S. Amateur will be held Aug. 18-24 in Pinehurst, N.C.More like this story
