The gazebo in Porterdale is getting a facelift thanks to efforts by Councilwoman Arline Chapman to save the structure near the intersection of Ga. Highway 81 and Elm Street.
According to Porterdale Mayor Bobby Hamby, the council voted 3-2 in favor of a motion by Councilman Mike Harper to allot 30 days for proponents of the gazebo to raise the $1,400 needed for its repair or it would be torn down. The vote came at the council's July 7 meeting.
Hamby said Chapman adopted the gazebo as a project and has raised the necessary funds to have the structure overhauled. Hamby said the gazebo will get a new roof as well as other repairs.
The gazebo became a topic of council discussion after Councilwoman Linda Finger complained that it had become a nighttime gathering place for illicit activities.
Both Hamby and Chapman said they had received several phone calls from Porterdale residents who were upset that the council might do away with the structure.
