All-Area Track
Marks, Allen, Hubert earn top honors

The 2008 track season was a season full of highlights for local squads, including one team region championship, 14 top-eight individual finishes at the state meet and 12 individual region championships.

Three athletes played major roles in the success of local track teams this spring. Newton's Shay Marks, Eastside's Dominique Hubert and Rockdale's Lavon Allen were among the favorites in their events whether they were competing on the local or state level.

For those reasons, Marks is the Girls Athlete of the Year on the Citizen's 2008 All-Area Track Team, while Hubert and Allen are the Boys Athletes of the Year.

Marks, a senior, ended her remarkable career with a strong year for the Lady Rams.

At the Citizen Challenge, Marks' brilliance led the Newton girls to the team championship. She produced record-setting efforts in the long jump and the triple jump while also winning the 100-meter dash and running the anchor leg on Newton's winning 4x100-meter relay team. All told, she scored 33.5 points in the meet.

In the Region 2-AAAAA Meet, Marks earned a trip to the Class AAAAA state meet with a first-place finish in the triple jump at 37 feet, 7 inches. She also just missed state berths with third-place finishes in the long jump (18 feet, 51/4 inches) and the 100-meter dash (12.69 seconds).

Marks produced the best local finish for a girls athlete at the state meet, finishing third in the Class AAAAA triple jump with an effort of 37 feet, 9 inches.

Dominique Hubert, a junior, used his speed to help the Eastside boys collect the Region 8-AAAA championship.

At the region meet, Hubert won three individual events, sweeping both of the short sprint races. He won the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.87 seconds and claimed the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.95 seconds. He also prevailed in the long jump with an effort of 23 feet, 43/4 inches and ran a leg on Eastside's winning 4x100-meter relay team (42.34 seconds).

Hubert followed up his success at the region meet with a strong showing at the Class AAAA state meet. He secured a pair of third-place finishes in the sprints - posting a time of 10.70 seconds in the 100 and a time of 21.82 in the 200. Hubert also helped the Eagles finish sixth in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 42.20 seconds.

At the Citizen Challenge, Hubert swept both the 100 and the 200.

Allen, a senior, was a double winner for Rockdale at the Citizen Challenge, setting a new record in the triple jump (44 feet, 81/4 inches) and prevailing in the 400-meter dash (49.71 seconds).

At the Region 8-AAAA Meet, Allen earned three state berths with second-place finishes in the long jump (22 feet, 103/4 inches), triple jump (46 feet, 51/2 inches) and the 400-meter dash (51.12 seconds).

Allen capped off his season with a pair of strong finishes in the Class AAAA state meet. He placed third in the long jump at 23 feet, 11 inches and claimed fourth in the triple jump at 46 feet, 111/4 inches.
